Located south of Edwards Rd. in Fort Pierce is the
place known as "The Miller Wild Tract".
While doing research on the locations of many of St. Lucie County's
Environmentally Sensitive Lands, Paul Johnson discovered this
property. It is a triangular shaped property and is bounded on
the western side by 10 Mile Creek, and on the east by 5 Mile Creek.
Time was spent to explore the property, both before and after the
hurricane years 2004 & 2005. There are existing trails,
perimeter roads, and some wooden bridges, plus a wooden observation
deck on 10 Mile Creek. The topography ranges from open prairie
and grassland, to densely wooded oak hammock and terrain very much
like the Ft. Pierce Bike Trail. Significant animal trails
existed, and these were ridden by cyclists as a matter of exploration.
At some point, a change in signs was noticed: A new sign was added.
It was the sign stating the
property was now called St. Lucie River Preserve State Park.
That changes the scene for riding. Cyclists have access to all
(except one) ESL's in St. Lucie County, but we have no policy or
M.O.U. in place with the State Parks System.
We believe this is a
great place to ride bikes. Go out and try it for yourself.
Guided rides can be arranged, as the animal trails are somewhat narrow
and minimally cleared.
Airborne wants to pursue an agreement with the managers of this new
State Preserve Park. At this point all we know is that it falls
under the severely stretched park management at Savannas Preserve
State Park. We are looking for a few people who can:
1.
Introduce the Airborne MTB Club to the
Park Manager
2. Explain & show where bikes are currently riding
3. Explain where we would like to ride and cut new trails
4. Set Up whatever kind of agreement we need, and what type of contact
arrangement needs to be put in place for new trails and park
management.
5. Tag, Cut and maintain trails
